Marriage of Janet Raleigh to Stanley J. O'Connor on Sept 4, 1952

"Miss Janet Raleigh, daughter of Prof. George J. Raleigh and Mrs. Raleigh of 1010 Hanshaw Rd., became the bride of Stanley James O'Connor Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James Stanley O'Connor of Washington, D.C., at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, 1952, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception.
  Miss Joan Carson of Washington, D.C., a Cornell classmate and sorority sister of the bride, was maid of honor. Mrs. Phyllis Boothroyd Terwilliger and Miss Ruth Hamilton, Ithaca, classmates. were bridesmaids. ... Martha and Jean Warren, twin daughters of Prof. Stanley W. Warren and Mrs. Warren, of Ithaca were flower girls. ... The bridegroom's father served as his best man. Ushers were William and Edward Raleigh, brothers of the bride, Cadwallader V. Noyes and Allan Bruckner, all of Ithaca.
  Mrs. O'Connor was graduated from Ithaca High School, Class of 1947. Both the bride and bridegroom were graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell in June 1951 where the bride was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. Mr. O'Connor also attended Balliol College at Oxford, England, where he studied political science and government and did graduate work at the University of Virginia in the Woodrow Wilson School of Foreign Affairs. He served with Army Intelligence."

BF104849-001 DEED (dated 8/3/1936, recorded 8/5/1936) Stanley W. and Esther Y. Warren to George J and Janet Weeks Raleigh,
  This property straddled the border between the Town of Ithaca and Cayuga Heights Village.

The Cornell Directory of Students for 1949-50 listed Janet Raleigh as "Raleigh Janet M 51A 974 Hanshaw Rd 41308." In 1949 and 1952 Ithaca City Directories, George Raleigh is listed, without house number but with the phone number 4-1308. In 1953 Street directory, George is listed as "1010 George J Raleigh 4-1308 @."

Janet Weeks Raleigh died in 1980. George J. Raleigh resided at 1010 Hanshaw Rd, when he died on 11/16/ 1982.

In 1986, their daughter, Mrs. Janet R. O'Connor, as executrix, divided the property. She sold Parcel A and took ownership of Parcel B with her husband, Stanley O' Connor.

049920-001 DEED (dated and recorded 2/28/1986) O'CONNOR JANET R/ AS EXX, RALEIGH GEORGE J/ BY EXX to Janet & Peter Carruthers, 1986, selling Parcel A of 1010 Hanshaw property. The deed includes a survey map with  date 2/6/1986. The deed suggests that the Carruthers were already living in 1010 Hanshaw Rd.  This is confirmed in the 1985 Ithaca City Directory, which shows Peter Carruthers at that address.

049925-001 DEED (dated and recorded 2/28/1986) O'CONNOR JANET R/ AS EXX, RALEIGH GEORGE J/ BY EXX to Janet R and Stanley J. O'Connor. The deed includes the same survey map dated 2/6/1986. Transfer of Parcel B. Map shows no residence, but a barn. The barn is still extant and apparently well maintained as of 2025.

Note: In 1986, Janet R and Stanley J. O'Connor lived at 617 Highland Rd, Ithaca.

Extracts from obituary for George J. Raleigh ,The Ithaca Journal, Nov 18 1982

"George J. Raleigh, 84, of 1010 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, died in Tompkins Community Hospital, Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1982. He was a native of Clyde, Kan., son of the late Stephen Martin and Mary Sinnott Raleigh. He was the widower of Janet Weeks Raleigh who died in 1980.

Mr. Raleigh was an emeritus professor of vegetable crops at Cornell, and served on the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences from 1932 until his retirement in 1966.

His research on plant nutrition and vegetable production included development of new varieties, notably Buttercrunch lettuce. 

He was an Army veteran of World War I and received the Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stanley J. O'Connor of Ithaca; three sons, George J. Raleigh of Rochester, William J. Raleigh of Burlingame, Calif. and Edward W. Raleigh of Wilmington, Del.; three brothers, Dr. Walter P. Raleigh and Francis J. Raleigh, both of Clyde, Kan., and Dr. Stephen M. Raleigh of State College, Pa.: and five grandchildren."
