Woman Dies at 101: Once Taught Here -- Obituary for Miss Helen Knox

"Miss Helen Knox, a retired teacher in Ithaca High School and Cascadilla Preparatory School, died Sunday, Dec. 15, at the age of 101, in Sheffield, Mass. Miss Knox had lived at the Wide Acre Rest Home in Sheffield since 1957.
A graduate of Cornell University in 1897, Miss Knox attended the University of Berlin. She taught German in Ithaca High School until 1920 when prejudices growing out of World War I eliminated the language as a course of study in public schools. She continued her teaching career as a Latin instructor and resumed teaching German at the Cascadilla School.
Born in West Winfield in 1862, she spend most of her childhood in Whitesboro. She taught in various schools in New York and was principal of a school in St. Peter, Minn. before attending Cornell. She retired from Ithaca High School in 1928.
After leaving the Cascadilla School in 1942, Miss Knox moved to Southern California where she was active in alumnae organizations, the DAR, and the AAUW. In 1957, at the age of 95, she flew back to New York City and subsequent retirement to Sheffield.
In addition to her work as a teacher, Miss Knox served as a member of the State Department of Education's committee for revising the German syllabus and as chairman of the committee for preparing the state board examinations in German.
Miss Knox was a member of the Blandford Historical Society for many years and for nearly 50 years a member of the DAR.
She is survived by a brother, the Rev. Herbert Knox, a retired Presbyterian minister living in Sheffield, and a nephew, George Knox of Tarrytown."
