"John Philip Pendleton of North Port, Florida, died March 22, 2018 after a brief illness. He was born in Ithaca, New York, son of the late Professor Claude M. and Miriam Frost Pendleton. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII from 1944-1945. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree in 1949, and was employed by the New York State Department of Public Works from 1949 to 1955. From 1955 to 1981 he was an engineer for New York State Thruway Authority, serving the last ten years as Chief Engineer.
During his 32 year engineering career he received his Professional Engineering License in New York State and North Carolina, served as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and the International Bridge, Tunnel, and Turnpike Association.
After retirement, he earned a bachelor’s degree at Sage Evening College and a Master’s Degree in Community Psychology in 1987 at Sage Graduate College, Troy, New York. In his “retirement” years he served as Co-Director of Volunteer Services at St. Peter’s Hospice, Albany; adjunct instructor in Sage Junior College’s Social Science department; and academic advisor to returning students at The College of Saint Rose.
After moving to Chapel Hill, NC in 1993, he worked as a temporary employee at the University of North Carolina, and later at the Unicorn Bereavement Center in Hillsboro, NC as a counselor & coordinator until 1998, when he moved to Holly Springs, NC, where he volunteered in WakeMed Cary Hospital Emergency Department and Hospice of Wake County before moving to North Port, Florida in 2008. He served there as a volunteer at Tidewell Hospice and volunteered at the North Port Emergency Facility of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. While living in Slingerlands, New York he also served as a volunteer in various church activities and as a volunteer fire department commissioner, Boy Scout leader, Senior Citizen’s Services, and town recreation ad hoc planning committee member.
He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn Davies Pendleton. He is survived by his three children John S. Pendleton and his wife Pamela of Warrenton, VA, Mary P. Mellott and husband Steven of McDonough, GA, Susan P. Burke of North Port, FL, six grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren."
