GE Promotes Shop Leader, James Updyke. The Ithaca Journal, Aug 6 1956, P. 4 (with photo)
 
"James Updyke of 1314 Hanshaw Rd. has been appointed supervisor of the model shop at the General Electric Advanced Electronics Center here. His former position at the research and development laboratory was that of specialist_model shop. Duties of his new position include production planning for the shop and overseeing the manufacture of prototype and experimental models of systems machinery.
  The newly-appointed supervisor has been employed at the center since September 1952 when he was hired as the first model maker in the original model shop. Growth of metal-working facilities later found Updyke as working leader.
  He was discharged from the U.S. Navy as machinist mate, and his experience in the metalworking field includes work with Ithaca Gun Co., the Adding Machine Division of the National Cash Register Co., and Goodman Enterprises of Trumansburg. He is a member of the Ithaca Industrial Management Club
  Updyke's wife is the former Betty Bortz of Ithaca."
