"The Colonial Building, constructed around 1830, is the earliest surviving structure on the Commons. It is Greek Revival, with monumental columns and a full pediment. Major alterations occurred in 1914, when grocer Fred Atwater added two side wings in the then popular Colonial Revival style, and in 1934, when he cut the lower sections of the columns and installed plate glass display windows. More recently, in 1991-92, the first floor was remodeled in a somewhat more sympathetic style, which draws loosely on classical forms such as the building’s original front-facing pediment."
