"The four-story structure which adjoins the company's local office at the corner of Green and Cayuga Sts., is of reinforced concrete construction--claimed to be the first building erected in Ithaca to have welded steel reinforcement. Facing is red brick, trimmed with Indiana limestone. The 30,000 square feet of floor space will accommodate many more than the initial 145 persons who will be employed there out of the total of approximately 600 New York State Electric & Gas Corporation employed now located here. Improved working conditions include sound proofing for offices and mechanical departments, new heating and winter air conditioning, new scientific indirect lighting and other comforts. The cost is estimated at $210,000.
So modern and complete is the 60 unit business machine operation that visitors from all over the United States and from as far away as Japan and Spain have come to inspect the installation....
Among the modern features of the building are soundproof and fireproof removable office partitions of walnut veneer filled with rock wool insulation and acoustically-treated ceiling of the first floor mechanical department. It is claimed to be one of the first buildings in Ithaca to incorporate modern sound deadening for the comfort of employes. The heating system, which combines air purifying and humidifying, is a specially designed gas installation, with forced hot air circulation and a separate heating unit for each floor. The modernistic indirect lamps, giving 40 to 50 'foot candles' per unit, meet the latest recommendations of lighting engineers for schools, factories, and stores."
