"COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
In 1906 the Associated Gas & Electric Company, a utility holding company, was formed to consolidate a group of gas and electric companies under one umbrella organization. Their main office was located in Ithaca, and the oldest company in the association was the Ithaca Gas Light Company, established in 1852. It went bankrupt in the early 1940s and under the court’s supervision was broken up into smaller companies.
This collection contains publications of the Associated Gas and Electric Company from 1924-1937, and bankruptcy materials from 1941-1945."

“In late 1915, the Ithaca Gas Light and Ithaca Electric Light & Power companies were consolidated as the Ithaca Gas & Electric Corporation. and by the end of the following year, the new company was given a new architectural image. The gable-roofed frame building at the northeast comer of South Cayuga and East Green streets, dating from the early nineteenth century, was replaced in 1916 by a modem, three-story office building, its walls largely glazed between brick piers and its low-pitched roof concealed by parapet walls.”

Historical note: Originally a three-story building for the Ithaca Gas and Electric Corporation, founded in 1915 with the merger of the Ithaca Gas Light Company (1852) and the Ithaca Electric Light Power Company, the precursor of the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. The first floor had offices and a showroom for appliances demonstrating household comforts; the second, office space; the third, an “auditorium” that was often used by the Ithaca Federation of Women’s Clubs. Driscoll Brothers and Company operated a prolific design and construction firm from about 1880 to about 1940. They continued in the building materials supply business until 1957."
