123 South Cayuga St. Historic name: Ithaca Gas and Electric Corporation Building

"Four-story, three-bay, dark red tapestry brick commercial building with “Onondaga Litholite” stone trim; street- level facade retains recessed entrance in central bay with wide, overhanging marquee chained to the exterior wall from brass lion-headed medallions and large display windows with multi-light transoms in side bays; second and third stories retain Chicago-style windows with transoms above and wood spandrel panels below; vertical brick pilasters capped with stone capitals mark comers and divide bays extending from street level to a deep comice between the third and fourth stories; fourth story (added 1922) retains historic Chicago-style windows; a shallow stone comice and brick parapet wall with stone coping and stepped parapet shape above the central bay with a recessed nameplate panel at the roofline. Built 1916.
Builder: Driscoll Brothers and Company
Historical note: Originally a three-story building for the Ithaca Gas and Electric Corporation, founded in 1915 with the merger of the Ithaca Gas Light Company (1852) and the Ithaca Electric Light Power Company, the precursor of the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation. The first floor had offices and a showroom for appliances demonstrating household comforts; the second, office space; the third, an “auditorium” that was often used by the Ithaca Federation of Women’s Clubs. Driscoll Brothers and Company operated a prolific design and construction firm from about 1880 to about 1940. They continued in the building materials supply business until 1957."
