126-128 East State St. Historic name: Brooks Block 

"Three-story, five-bay, painted brick commercial building with slate-shingled mansard roof; street-level facade has two storefronts (both altered ca. 1970) with angled display windows and entrances; second and third stories retain rectangular windows with stone lintels and sills and historic one-over-one sash; three dormers have wood paneled gables; center dormer retains rectangular window with historic two-over-two sash while flanking dormers retain arched windows with historic one-over-one sash; Built ca. 1840; final half-story and mansard roof added after 1883; alteration ca. 1970.
Historical note: A. and C. Whaley founded the Brooks Pharmacy in 1850 and operated the pharmacy, later called Gauntlett and Brooks, in the first story from ca. 1890 until 1978. Local legend suggests that the building was used as an Underground Railroad stop."

Brooks Block 126-132 E State St

"Second Empire is a European style that gained popularity in the United States following the Civil War. Its hallmark is the masnsard roof, purportedly by French architect Francois Mansart to elude taxes. Taxes were assessed based on the number of stories so Mansart cleverly disguised an extra story by using the space directly under the roof, with dormer windows to allow in light. Both the economy and European origin of the design appealed to Ithaca’s late 19th-century businessmen, and many commercial buildings were remodeled in this style, including the Clinton House. These two buildings date from the 1840s, but both had roof alterations some time after 1883. Patterned slate was a common roofing material of the period."
