"The new $30,000 John C. McCrea business and residential block at 106 East State street will be opened for occupancy tomorrow, March 1. It is an attractive addition to the city's business section.
Work started in July, 1917, on razing the building which stood on the old Philip Stevens market site, and then the erection of the new building was begun by C. J. Swartwood, a contractor.
The new building is of brick construction, and consists of four stories and a basement. It contains a store on the ground floor and three upper apartments, each consisting of six rooms and a bath. The store measures 19x80 and the basement 19x90. The building is modernly equipped and has steam heat, electric lights and is of oak finish inside. There is a fire escape in the rear leading from the ground to the top floor. There is a large cement areaway and driveway in the rear of the building leading to Cayuga street.
The basement has cement floors and a clearance of seven feet. A vestibule entrance leads to the stairway on the upper floors from the street, adjoining the store entrance on the east.
The apartments are modernly equipped. There is an electric lighting time clock and a system of mail boxes on each floor. The air shaft running from the store to the roof provides exciting lighting.
C. L. Vivian was the architect of the new building. The contractors in addition to Mr. Swartwood were as follows: Glass and hardware, Treman, King & Company; electrical work, Symons Electric Company; fire escape, Williams Brothers; ranges and stoves, Ithaca Gas & Electric Corporation; plumbing, Frank H. Higgins."
