National Register of Historic Places Registration Form for Ithaca Downtown Historic District, December 18, 2004

"After being in business downtown for the last 25 years, John P. Chacona, veteran Ithaca confectioner, familiarly known as 'Big John', is moving his store at 104 East State street to the East Hill section. He has leased the store at the northeast corner of College avenue and Dryden road and within a few days will be located on the Hill.
'Big John' was one of the pioneers in the confectionery business in Ithaca. He has always been located on State street with his 'sugar bowl' stores. He has now decided to forsake the downtown business section and will open an attractive confectionery shop in his new location. The store, which he has occupied in his block at 104 East State street, will be leased to another concern, he stated today, negotiations now being in progress with several prospective tenants."
