"Four-story, ten-bay, brick commercial building; street-level facade retains one storefront (westernmost one) still flanked by period cast iron colurrms and three altered storefronts (altered in 1937, 1950, and 1960 respectively) with display windows and recessed entrances; second, third and fourth stories retain some historic rectangular windows with stone lintels and sills and some modem replacement one-over-one sash; simple concrete coping at roofline replaces cornice; Built 1851; alterations in 1937, 1950, 1955, and 1960.
Historical note: The Grant Block is located on the former site of the 1811 tavern Grant’s Coffee House, which served as the village hall, council chamber, and stagecoach office into the 1820s. In the 1880s, the building was occupied by A.H. Platts and Company, a cigar manufacturer. A stamped metal frieze with garland swags and overhanging cornice dating to the last quarter of the nineteenth century was removed during the 1955 remodeling."
