“His health gradually failing as the result of more than a year’s illness, Michael Casey, 69, Ithaca broker and for many years a leading hotel proprietor of this city, died Sunday afternoon, July 4, at his home, 216 North Geneva street.
Mr. Casey was born July 11, 1856, in the town of Danby, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Casey. His early days were spent on the farm with his father and he was a young man when he came to Ithaca to make his residence. One of his first positions was with the Ithaca Hotel and he often remarked that his desire was to own that business which he did in later years.
He started in the hotel business in this city when he purchased the
Exchange Hotel in West State Street of Charles Bush and completely remodeled it to suit his own desires. A few year later he purchased the
Alhambra Hotel in East State Street, where the White and Burdick drug store is now located. He conducted it for about five years and then attained one of his alms in life, the ownership of the Ithaca Hotel.
He remodelled[sic] that hostelry and conducted the business successfully for about five years. After selling the business he retired, his only activity during the period being the construction of the Casey block on North Aurora Street. He then entered business with Salem Twist and a brokerage office was conducted until Mr. Twist’s health failed and he withdrew his interest in the partnership….
Besides his widow, Mrs. Veronica Gilmore Casey, he is survived by two daughters; Mrs. G.B. Woodruff of Darien, Conn., and
Mrs. James J. Clines of Ithaca; two sons: Dr. Albert H. Casey of Dubuque, Ia., and Edward J. Casey of this city; three sisters: Mrs. S.D. Higley of Brooklyn, Mrs. Michael Quinn and Mrs. Phillip Bond of Ithaca; also four grandchildren.”
