Ithaca merchant Frederick A. McClune (1863-1943) seemed to have an instinct for the next big thing in transportation. He opened the first bicycle shop in Ithaca in 1892 as the bicycle craze swept the nation. In 1900, he expanded his business to include automobiles, becoming the first auto dealer in the city.

“F. A. McClune has just closed a contract for the agency of the Cadillac again this year. Mr. McClune has not yet decided where will display the cars.
His E. M. F. and Flanders showrooms will be in the Pritchard & Son carriage repository on Green street. Messrs. Pritchard and McClune will work that agency together and share in the business.”
