"Veteran Contractor Dies at Eighty-Nine," ithaca Daily Journal, June 9, 1909, 3.
"Gideon C. McClune was born November 16, 1820, in the town of Ulysses, near the Willow Creek station. His early education was received in a little log school house near his house and at Jacksonville. Removing to Ithaca, he attended school in the little academy on the site now occupied by the High School.... Later he attended the school at Lima, and took a course at the Auburn Academy...
On April 1, 1836, Mr. McClune returned to Ithaca, where he was engaged in clerking in a store. Later he became proprietor of a general store on North Aurora street, where Wall & Son's store now stands. Failing health caused an order from his physician to get our of doors. He accordingly sold his store, and entered the vegetable business, with gardens on East Buffalo street. Later he engaged in the ice business and for ten years was the only ice dealer in the city.
...In the early forties Mr. McClune foresaw a bright future for a person in the stone business. His intuitive mind grasped readily the fact that in those early days a good stone quarry would be welcomed by the residents as a necessity.
Accordingly he purchased the property, two miles south of the city, on which was a paying quarry. This property is located near what is now called the McClune road. Mr. McClune immediately started the business and soon had it on a substantial basis. As the city grew, the need for sidewalks became greater and he soon had work in all parts of town, including the University grounds. It is said he built nearly all of the stone walks on the Campus and fully three-fourths of the walks in this city."
