C. U. Appoints Philip Johnson to Education School Position

"The University has announced the appointment of Philip G Johnson as professor of rural education in its School of Education.
  Since 1946 Professor Johnson has been a science specialist in the United States Office of Education's secondary division.
  As a member of the faculty from 1935-46, Professor Johnson was director of science teacher training at the University and in the Ithaca public schools.
  He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1923, worked in the University's High School there, and received a master of arts degree in 1931.
  Coming here as a Charles Lathrop Pack Fellow, he received the Ph.D. in 1933 and then taught for two years in the Teachers College at Nebraska,
  He was a consultant to the pre-induction training branch of the War Department in 1943 and to the military government in Germany in 1947. From 1944-46 he was president of the National Science Teachers Association."

"Olive Hubbard and Philip G. Johnson were married April 28 at the Carolina Inn. A luncheon, attended by members of their immediate families, followed the ceremony.
  The bride lived in Albany, N.Y. before moving to Chapel Hill. The bridegroom is a professor emeritus of Cornell University."

"CHAPEL HILL - Philip Gustaf Johnson, a resident of Carolina Meadows, died Monday. He was 94.
  A native of Loomis, Nebraska, Johnson received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Nebraska. He earned a doctorate from Cornell University.
  At Cornell, Johnson helped develop unique programs for high school teachers, involving education students in leadership work.
  In 1946, Johnson was appointed specialist for science in the U.S. Office of Education in Washington, D.C. He served many state and urban school systems, helping to organize the National Science Teachers Association. In 1953, he returned to Cornell as a professor and director of programs. He later served through foundation-supported programs in Chile and Costa Rica.
  Johnson received many citations and awards for scholarly leadership work.
  A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in University Presbyterian Church.
  Survivors include Johnson's wife, Olive T. Johnson of Carolina Meadows; a son, Thomas T. Johnson of Burlingame, Calif.; a daughter, Phyllis J. Evans of Chapel Hill; a brother, Harald J. Johnson of Scituate, Mass., and Albany, Calif.; and four grandchildren."
