NEWPORT [NY] - Robert C. Wheeler, 86, formerly of Newport, died on March 30, 2016, at the Masonic Care Community, Utica, where he resided for the past six years.
Mr. Wheeler was born on June 5, 1929, in Utica, a son of the late Everett G. and Dorothy (Doty) Wheeler. He graduated from West Canada Valley Central School as Valedictorian of the Class of 1947. Bob furthered his education at Cornell University, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1951. On June 1, 1952, he was united in marriage with the former Barbara J. Woodward in Ithaca. Bob owned and operated his own farm for many years in Newport until retiring. The couple later moved to Parkhurst Road, Middleville, and Barbara preceded him in death on December 7, 2008.
Robert served as a Director of Madison Mutual Insurance Company from 1970 to 2012 and was a former Tax Assessor for the Town of Newport. He was a 60 year member of Newport Lodge #455 F. & A. M. and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a son, Craig (Lori) Wheeler of Newport; a sister, Carolyn (James) Williams of Guilderland; eight grandchildren, Joanna Waldron, Leigh Amendolare, Michael and Jason Wheeler, Kyle Wheeler-Travis, and Jody, Alicia and Chad Wheeler; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, David C. Wheeler, on October 4, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Sellers of the Community Baptist Church, Poland, officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home are prior to the service on Saturday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date in Newport Cemetery.
Newport Masonic Lodge will conduct their ritualistic service at the funeral home on Saturday at 1:30 p.m."
