Early Friend Pays Tribute To SabineThe Ithaca Journal, Jan 20 1961, P. 3, Col. 6.===
Albert Hazen Wright of 113 E Upland Rd., professor emeritus of zoology at Cornell, today paid a tribute to Prof. Emeritus George H. Sabine who died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 1961, in Washington, D.C.
Professor Wright said:
"A dear friend tells me
George Sabine has gone. George Holland Sabine was one of the most able Cornell scholars for the last 60 years. The writer, a biologist, was his roommate and distinctly felt he was the ablest mind we found in the graduate ranks of our period, 1902-1910. Probably no one served longer or better the Philosophical Review which began at Cornell. He had an independent mind. One episode suffices. I asked him, "How did you vote with the Democratic presidential candidate from your town and the Republican from Marion-both from your state ?" He answered, "I voted for Eugene Debs in prison who said he would not change what he said to get out of prison."
"Two of the most scholarly sections of Cornell have him to thank as provost for his interest. He chose our present efficient university librarian after many interviews and began Regional History which blossomed into Cornell Archives. Dayton, Ohio, gave us three outstanding alumni, two now departed, Floyd Carlisle and now G. H. Sabine. The third we yet have, our respected colleague, Oscar von Engeln."
