Obituary for Carl Washburn

"CANDOR, NY - Carl Washburn, of Candor, NY, died on December 14, 2002 in Ithaca, NY, after a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 70 years old. Mr. Washburn was born on July 2, 1932 in Ithaca, N.Y., the son of Kenneth and Helen Washburn.
He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1950 and attended Cornell University for two years.
He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. He moved to California and was employed by Berkeley Division of Beckman Instruments from 1955 to 1965 as a designer. There he served for three years as president and two years as treasurer of the Beckman/Berkeley Credit Union. Mr. Washburn returned to New York in 1966 to work for IBM Federal Systems Division, Owego, as a Design Engineer, working there for 27 years until his retirement.
He was active in several local organizations, joining the Tioga County Men's Garden Club in 1970, the Candor Boy Scout Troop 42 committee in 1980 and remaining an active member in both.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Raili Tontti Washburn; sons, Lars, Kent and Charles (wives, Patricia, Milagros and Jeannie, respectfully): one daughter, Katrina (husband, Shannon) Mackey; a brother, Richard: and five grandchildren, Kaarin and Neil Washburn, Danny Dacanay, Grace Washburn and Kaisa Mackey.
Visiting hours will be held at The Candor Funeral Parlour, 137 Main St., Candor, N.Y., on Thursday, January 2, 2003 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the Candor McKendree Methodist Church on Friday, January 3, 2003 at 3 p.m. An interment will be held at the Imatra Cemetery in Imatra, Finland, his wife's hometown."
