 "Prof. Wheeler Dies; Farm-Home Pioneer"
  "Ralph Hicks Wheeler, 78, one of the organizers of Farm and Home Week at Cornell University, and professor emeritus of Extension service, died today, Tuesday, March 20, 1962, at his home, 119 Forest Home Drive.
  Professor Wheeler was a member of the student committee that assisted in planning the first Farm and Home Week in 1908. Today marks the opening of the 1962 Agricultural Progress Days, which is the new name for the old Farm and Home Week.
  He continued as chairman of Farm and Home Week until 1939. For many years he was in charge of the State Fair exhibits for the State College of Agriculture.
  Professor Wheeler began his long association at Cornell in 1905 as a special student. In 1909 he took a temporary teaching assignment with the Agriculture Department. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture in 1912 at the university.
  In 1917 he was appointed professor in Extension service. Later he served as acting director of Extension in 1924 and in 1931. In 1932 he was appointed assistant treasurer of the university.
  He retired from teaching in 1951 with the rank of professor emeritus.
  For three years, from 1945 to 1948, Professor Wheeler served as director of finance for the state colleges.
  For many years, he taught public speaking and parliamentary law.
  Professor Wheeler was a director of the Ithaca Savings Bank and a member of the Ithaca Rotary Club, Senior Citizens, Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and the Forest Home Methodist Chapel.
  He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Richard C. Crosby of Birmingham, Ala.; 2 sons, Kenneth E. of Olean and Ralph Jr. of Tripoli, Libya; 2 sisters, Mrs. Percy Pettit of Canandaigua and Mrs. Stanley Freeman of Hastings Land, Rochester; 6 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews."
