“Captain VanOrder was born in Ithaca, and was the son of Captain Abram VanOrder, whose death occurred a number of years ago. His early life was spent here and he was educated in the old Ithaca Academy. His first business undertaking was in a hardware concern and a few years later he and his father established a boat building business on the Cayuga Lake Inlet.
About 15 years ago Mr. VanOrder took the position of captain on the Frontenac on Cayuga Lake. In that capacity he served four years an d later went to Seneca Lake, where he was captain on a lake steamer for two years…. With his wife, 8 years ago, he moved to Harrisburg to live with his daughter, Mrs. Lena Fahnestock. Beside his wife and daughter, the captain is survived by four sisters, Mrs. D. Savage, Mr. Helen M. Warren, and Mrs. Almira L. Minier, who live at No. 418 North Cayuga street, in this city, and Mrs. John Merwin, of Elmira.”
