Obituary for John J. Nolde.

 "ORONO - John J. Nolde, a well-known Asian historian and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, who served the University of Maine from 1950 until 1984, died Sunday. He was 68.
  Dean from 1966 until 1973, he saw the college through the turmoil and changes of the late 1960s. Describing the events in a report written near the end of his tenure as dean, he said,
'The movement came late to Maine and never reached the intensity of events at Berkeley, Columbia and Cornell.
'It was, nevertheless, nerve wracking, largely because many of us had followed events elsewhere rather closely and feared that the Orono campus would follow in the footsteps of the others.'
  He was born Dec. 21, 1919, in Reading, Pa., to Hans W. and Margaret Nolde. Graduating in 1941 from Cornell University with a degree in economics, his studies were halted by World War II. A member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he was stationed in the Far East.
  After his discharge, he married Nancy Kurtz who survives him.
  He resumed his scholarly pursuits and in 1950 received a doctorate in history from Cornell.
  On the faculty of the history department, he interrupted his 34-year career at the university twice - 1953-54 and 1965-66. Both times he studied as a research fellow at the University of Hong Kong.
  Well published, he wrote numerous articles on The China Cantos of Ezra Pound.
  He was a member and secretary of the board of trustees of the Bangor Theological Seminary from 1971 to 1974 and in 1981-82 he was a member of the Fulbright Screening Committee for East Asia, Institute for International Education."
