"Ex-commissioner is dead at 74

  Martin P. Catherwood, 74, of 304 Highgate Road, a former New York State industrial commissioner, and former dean of the Industrial and Labor Relations School at Cornell University, died Thursday Nov. 23, 1978, in Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City.
  He was reported suffering from leukemia.
  Mr. Catherwood was a trustee emeritus at Cornell, having served on the board of trustees for 18 years. He was also professor emeritus of the ILR School.
  In 1970 the Industrial and Labor Relations School library, said to be the most comprehensive in the field, was named in Mr. Catherwood's honor.
  He was state industrial commissioner from 1958 to 1971 and was dean of the ILR School from 1947 to 1958.
  From 1941 to 1947 Mr. Catherwood was New York State commissioner of commerce.
  He was born in Battle Ground, Ind., and did his undergraduate work at the University of Illinois. His affiliation with Cornell began in 1927 and he earned his doctorate here in 1930.
  He was an assistant professor of business management and later professor in that department. In 1939 he was named professor of public administration.
  Mr. Catherwood is survived by his wife, Louise Millhouse Catherwood; and two daughters, Mary Catherwood of Stamford, Conn., and Kate Fackelman of New London, Pa."
