"Alva Burritt Kennedy, whose death occurred Monday evening was for more than 30 years a leading jeweler here. During most of that time he occupied a store at 218 East State Street, which he took over after the death of his uncle, Joseph C. Burritt. Mr. Kennedy was the grandson of Joseph Burritt, who came to Ithaca in 1816 from Stratford, Conn., bringing his bride and the tools of his trade in a one-horse wagon.  The store which he then established continued in the Burritt family for more than 100 years.
...
He always maintained an interest in civic affairs and served two terms as alderman from the third ward under Mayors George Miller and William Gunderman."
