“Friends to the number of two hundred gathered at Lyceum Hall, last Friday evening, with baskets and dishes filled with all kinds of goodies, ice cream, water melons, etc., with the Peruville brass band stationed on the stage. In readiness to await the return of Dr. H. Genung, who, as it happened, was out driving with one of our young ladies, until all had arrived at the hall, when he was informed that he was wanted and was escorted to the hall, where Rev. Mr. Andrews introduced the Doctor, after which the band played one of their favorite pieces, followed by a general hand-shaking all around; after which Mr. Andrews, with some very appropriate remarks, presented to the Doctor an office chair and lamp valued at $20. Then those edibles were freely passed by young gentlemen, and after a social visit, those who chose joined in the merry dance, after music furnished by Shaver & Guler. This was a surprise, truly, and a very successful one all around. The Doctor’s parents, accompanied by relatives, were there, and we judge that the Doctor has hardly been able to tell just how it happened yet. It was intended to meet at the Doctor’s new house, but it was decided that his friends numbered too many for the size and the strength of the house, but when one more Stone is added, we may meet then and there safely.”
