“The year 1967 was an active one in City of Ithaca affairs, with considerable physical change, present and future, and some controversy the prime elements.
These are the top stories:
1. A $1 million-plus Woolworth Department Store, Ithaca’s first Urban Renewal project, was built and opened on Nov. 15 on the block bounded by Cayuga, Green, Tioga and Clinton Sts. And Six Mile Creek. All businesses except two were relocated. A temporary 300-space city parking lot was opened. Main purpose of the building, developed by David M. Abbott, was to serve as a major traffic generator for the downtown, according to Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency.”
