Description
This house was built before 1840. The first listed owner was a Dr. Oliver Barker, a medical doctor, who died in 1877.  The structure has been modified at various uncertain dates and has been used as a two-family residence at various times.  It is believed the building originally faced south, away from Fall Creek.   When used as a two-family residence after house numbers were introduced, the southern portion of the building, with its door facing west, was 9 The Byway and the northern portion of the building, facing towards the creek, was 11 The Byway. In recent years, the property has been used as a single-family residence, using the address 11 The Byway.

In 1950, according to the census, the 1949 Cornell Directory of Staff, and Ithaca street directories from 1949-1956, based on matching phone numbers, the extended Underhill/Cramer family was living in 9 The Byway and the Tyler family was in 11 the Byway.  Thomas Underhill had acquired the entire property in 1923.
