Willard Straight Hall (Cornell University)

Built in 1924 as the student union on land that formerly comprised two houses: 9 and 11 Central Ave.

"The Union is given to the university by Mrs. Straight, in memory of her husband, the late Willard D. Straight, one of the university's most prominent alumni, and member of the class of 1901. As already announced, it will occupy a site immediately south of the University Library Building, and will contain restaurant and eating facilities, rooms for meetings and all sorts of college activities, a campus theater, offices, pool and billiard rooms, and generous sleeping quarters for university guests and visiting alumni. The union is planned to meet a long-felt need for an adequately equipped social center and meeting place for all the students of Cornell, thus fulfilling the request of Willard Straight to the effect that he would like to do something to make Cornell 'a more human place.'"
