109-113 E State St. Historic name: Bank of Ithaca, Colonial Building
"Three-story, five-bay, front gabled, Greek Revival-style, brick commercial building with pedimented three-story colonnade composed of four massive fluted wood Ionic columns; frieze reads “Colonial Building”; main block retains five rectangular windows with stone lintels and sills and historic one-over-one sash; one-story, brick street-level facade addition (1934) located at the base of the columns has three storefronts with angled display windows and recessed entrances, and decorative pediments above side bays; central block flanked by two-story, two-bay frame wings added 1910. These matching wings retain fretwork roof balustrades and street-level facade storefronts with display windows, side entrances, and white glass sign panels; second stories of wings retain three-sided bay windows with one-over-one sash.
Historical note: Built for the Bank of Ithaca in 1830, this is thought to be the oldest building in the 100 block of East State Street. Originally the building had a center entrance. Recessed basement access from the street was added in the 1850s. In the 1880s, the center entrance on the first floor was removed, and the six-over-six sash windows were changed. At the same time, two entrances framed by the colonnade and decorated with Italianatestyle panels and arches were installed. It housed the Ithaca Post Office from 1882 until 1910. In 1910, the center entrance was reintroduced with street-level facade display windows and projecting wings added on each side to create three complementary storefronts. In 1934, more commercial space was added below the columns, and the lower sections of the columns were subsequently removed on the first floor. There have been subsequent changes in this retail space."
