"Description:
223 South Albany Street is located on a narrow lot mid-block on the east side of the street. It is a modest one-and-a-half story house built in 1928 or 1929 in the bungalow mode, inspired by the Craftsman style. It is rectangular in plan a partial-width, fully enclosed front porch and a recessed entrance.
The low-pitched side-gabled roof has overhanging eaves have curved rafter tails. A gabled dormer projects from the west façade and a shed dormer projects along the east façade of the roof. Windows are generally 1/1, appearing singly and in pairs.
The centered shingle-clad gable dormer on the primary, west, façade has a group of three 1/1 windows. A group of five 1/1 windows encloses almost the entire width of the front (west) porch and a recessed entryway is located in the south corner. A narrow driveway is located along the north side of the house.
Significance:
Contributing. Architecturally significant.
223 South Albany Street is architecturally significant as an example of a modest house built in the bungalow mode, inspired by the Craftsman style. The house retains a high level of integrity and is representative of the type of infill development in the district towards the end of its period of significance.
The house was built in 1928 or 1929 for James G. Pritchard, owner of J.G. Pritchard & Son, an automobile dealership located at 227 South Cayuga Street. Pritchard lived at 209 South Geneva Street before moving to this newly constructed house.
