Description:
227 South Albany Street is located on a narrow lot on the east side of the street slightly north of West Clinton Street. It is a one-and-a-half-story frame house built in 1924 as a modest bungalow with Craftsman-style elements. The house is rectangular in plan with a full-width front (west) porch, a one-story projection on the east façade, and a shallow rectangular bay window on the south.
The medium-pitch side gable roof has deep, bracketed eaves that slightly flare over the porch. A bracketed gable dormer is located in the center of the west façade. Walls are clad in clapboard with the exception of the dormer, which is shingle-clad. A brick end wall chimney runs along the south façade and the foundation is parged masonry. Windows are generally 1/1.
The deep full-width porch on the west façade features battered wood porch posts on a partial height stucco wall. The primary entrance door is located off-center with a picture window the south. A secondary entrance covered with a gable hood is located on the north façade.
A paved driveway runs along the north façade to a small one-bay, flat-roofed, shiplap-clad garage. The garage was built at the same time as the house. The lawn on the south side of the house is part of the 233 South Albany Street lot.
Significance:
Contributing. Architecturally significant. Garage contributing and architecturally significant.
227 South Albany Street is architecturally significant as a good example of a modest bungalow-type house inspired by the Craftsman style. It retains its original form, massing, and almost all exterior features. The automobile garage is architecturally significant and retains its original form and shiplap cladding.
The house and garage were constructed ca. 1924, most likely for Anna Blackman. Blackman purchased the property from Pearl B. Stevens in June 1924 and retained ownership until 1946. Stevens had purchased the property at auction the previous December. Stevens and her husband Leroy Stevens also owned 116 North Titus Avenue and later owned 209 South Albany Street. Leroy Stevens was a taxi driver who was also dealt in real estate.
