120 East State St. Historic name: Hawkins Block

"Four-story, four-bay, painted brick, commercial building; first and second-story pebble dash treatment (ca. 1970s) also spans 122 East State Street; full-width metal awning attached with metal supports to pebble dash exterior above; third and fourth stories retain rectangular windows with stone sills, carved stone lintels, and historic two-over- two sash windows; elaborate brick entablature (added ca. 1870) consists of five blind brick arches originating from six corbel stops just above the fourth story windows, a paneled frieze, and corbelled comice; brick corbels capped with plinths mark the comers above the fourth story. Built 1840-1851; remodeled 1870. Architect: A.B. Dale (1870 remodeling)
Historical note: A series of dry goods merchants have occupied the Hawkins Block since 1858, including the Lewis family clothing store for decades beginning in 1946. The fourth story, with its elaborately corbelled cornice, was added in 1870, an "improvement" designed by architect A. B. Dale. The 1870 addition and remodeling took place in the year following the reorganization of the dry goods business Morrison, Hawkins, and Co. to Hawkins, Finch, and Co."
