Daughter of Jefferson and Matilda Barnes Dean of Newfield
"Noted Woman Dies At Home of Brother: Miss Kate Dean Summoned by Death--Sang for President Lincoln and Civil War Soldiers," Ithaca Journal, May 27, 1918, 3.
"Miss Kate Dean, 82, died Sunday afternoon at the residence of her brother, David M. Dean, 309 West Green street.
During the Civil War Miss Dean made a reputation singing in war meetings held for the purpose of obtaining recruits for the army. She was heard not only in meetings in this and adjoining counties, but throughout the state.
By special invitation she sang for President Abraham Lincoln on several occasions. So impressed was Lincoln that he issued her a pass to ho through the American lines."
