Obituary
"Born a slave on a Virginia plantation, Mr. Walker ran away from home while still a young lad, and made his way to Baltimore and later went to Philadelphia. By the time the Civil War loomed on the horizon he had drifted still farther north and was located in Geneva when the call came for men to join the colors. Together with John 'Ginger' Allen, who has resided here for many years, Walker went to Buffalo to enlist [during the Civil War]. Because of a ruling against colored troops in this state at the time, he was refused enlistment and went to Harrisburg. There he joined a Pennsylvania regiment.
For over three years he was a member of the Union forces and took part in the re-capture of Fort Sumter, engagements in Florida and other parts of the South. At the close of the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to the north. He made his home in Penn Yan for a time and then in the '70s came to this city to be coachman for the late Colonel Sprague. He remained with the Sprague family for a number of years and then was employed by Henry W. Sage. His connection with the Sage family lasted until the death of Mr. Sage. After that he had a number of jobs, but of late years had been living more or less of a retired life.
His funeral will be held at the family home at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon with Rev. Mr. Payne officiating.Internment will be in Lake View Cemetery. Besides his widow, he leaves a son, Robert F. Walker of this city, and four daughters, Miss Oda Walker of New York, Mrs. Joseph Woodson of Brooklyn, Mrs. Louise White of Trenton, N.J., and Mrs. Bernice White of this city. Mr. Walker was a member of Sidney Post, G.A.R., of this city."
