“Bert Washington, 63, known to county workers for many years as the genial janitor of the Court House, died unexpectedly at his home, 416 N Albany St., shortly before 9 a.m. today, May 24, 1944. He had been the Court House janitor ever since the present building was built.
Born in Ithaca, he was a lifelong resident, in his younger days he was known for his boxing ability. He was an ardent follower of the sport ever since. Before the new Court House was built, he was for years a janitor at the Post Office.
Besides his wife, Blanche M. Washington, he is survived by one son, Joseph Washington of Ithaca; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Grant of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. Bessie Phillips of Ithaca, and a brother, Arthur Washington of Ithaca.
He was a member of the Forest City Lodge 180, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World Improved.
