“Mrs. Agnes Brooks Payne, aged thirty-nine years, wife of William E. Payne, died at noon today at the family residence, 621 West Green street. Mrs. Payne was attending to her household duties and was sweeping a floor, when she collapsed and died almost instantly. She had not been seriously ill, but of late suffered from nervous trouble. Mrs. Payne was a well known colored woman, the manager of an employment agency for a number of years. Her husband is a well known waiter at the Ithaca Hotel. Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband, William; two daughters, Bernice and Naomi; three brothers, John of Pittsburgh, Pa., Charles of Champaign, Ill., and Will H. of Harpers Ferry, W. Va.; and one sister, Catherine Willis, of Ithaca.
Mrs. Payne was a prominent member of the A.M.E. Zion Church, being treasurer of Corinthian Chapter, No. 19, Order of the Eastern Star. The funeral will be held from the late residence Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, when a short prayer service will be held, and from the A.M.E. Zion Church at 3 o’clock, the Rev. R. Farley Fisher, officiating. The remains will be taken Monday night to Harpers Ferry, W. Va., where interment will be made.”
