Delpha Elizabeth Wiesendanger, 87, of 411 E. Irvin Ave., State College, professor emeritus of home economics at Penn State, died at her home Tuesday (April 29, 1986) at 3:20 a.m.
In 1946, she started her employment at Penn State, where until her retirement with emeritus rank Aug. 31, 1965, she held various positions in the College of Home Economics.
She had responsibility for field services and developed many annual institutes, workshops and conferences.
As head of the department of home management, housing and home art, she initiated and led the development of programs in housing, research and planning of new courses.
She had served as assistant dean of the College of Home Economics and head of the department of family economics and home management.
She was widely known for her studies in management and work simplification and published extensively in that field in professional journals.
She was a graduate of the Campbell Union High School, Campbell, Calif., and had received her bachelor's degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a master's degree in home economics from Cornell University.
From 1934 to 1944, she served 10 years with the Home Economics Extension Service at Cornell University, and from 1944 to 1946, she was associate professor of home management and family relations at the University of Arkansas.
She had acted in advisory capacities to school boards, architects, the Office of Education, and other colleges and universities in relation to space and equipment management for teaching of home economics.
She was a life member of the American Home Economics Association, and was a member of Omicron Nu, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Alpha Nu, Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Lambda Theta. She [was] also a member of the American Association of University Professors, American Association of University Women, Pennsylvania Home Economics Association, National Council on Family Relations, Pennsylvania Education Association, Adult Education Association and State College Woman's Club.
She was an avid gardener.
She was born Sept. 30, 1898, in Campbell, Santa Clara County, Calif., a daughter of John Edwin and Ida Matilda Anderson Wiesendanger.
She is survived by a sister, Alice Evelyn Wiesendanger of San Diego, Calif., and a niece."
