Obituary for Dorothy M. Adams

"SOUTH BURLINGTON - Dorothy M. Adams died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Vermont Respite House after a yearlong illness.
Dorothy "Dode" was born in Davenport, Iowa, on Sept. 23, 1911, the daughter of Rose [Einfelt] Johnson and Brice Johnson.
She was a graduate of Iowa State University where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Following graduation, she married Thurston M. Adams on April 11, 1933. They came to make their home on Loomis Street in Burlington in 1934 when Professor Adams joined the Agricultural faculty at the University of Vermont. Professor Adams predeceased her in 1961.
Dode worked for several years in the bursar department at the University of Vermont after the death of her husband.
A woman of boundless energy and a desire to help her community, Dode was well known for her volunteer work with several organizations including the American Red Cross and the First Congregational Church in Burlington. She was a charter member of the Austin Handbell Choir and helped to organize and run the church's Possibility Shop. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Manor Woods Association of South Burlington where she had made her home for the past 15 years.
Dode was a devoted Red Sox fan and an avid bridge player.
She is survived by three sons and their wives, John and Sally of Lexington, Mass., Donald and Rose Marie of Williamsville, N.Y., and William and Elizabeth of Essex Junction. Gram is also fondly remembered and will be missed by her grandchildren, Laurie, Lynne, Julie, David, Thomas, Emily, Christine and Kyle and their families including 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Eleanor Hanes of Florida and Peg Porter of California; a brother, William Johnson of New Mexico, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; sisters Elizabeth McClenahan and Bernice Kilpatrick; and a brother, Bruce Johnson."
