Ithacan (Ruth A. Heckman) Named to Lead Youths on Trip to Italy

"Miss Ruth A. Heckman of 46 Niemi Rd. has been appointed a group leader to Italy for the 1961 summer program of The Experiment in International Living.
  A free-lance writer, Miss Heckman is presently employed by Radio Station WHCU.
  In the past four years, Miss Heckman has lived and worked among Mexican peons, Alaskan Eskimos, Greek fishermen on the island of Chios where she was the first non-Greek staying in the village, and in Yucatan, Washington and Maryland.
  Miss Heckman has traveled extensively in the United States, including a canoe trip down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
  Miss Heckman organized and served as president of the Ithaca Dog Training Club.
  For two seasons she was associated with the New York theater, playing roles in the 48th St. and Cherry Lane Theaters.
  Miss Heckman was born in Albany and studied at Syracuse University, University of Baltimore, and the University of Guanajuato"

"Ruth Heckman Edmondson, world traveller and adventurer of Ithaca and Florida, died of cancer on July 21, 1994 at St. Vincent's Hospital & Medical Center in Portland, OR.
  Born in Albany. NY on 9/26/24, she was a graduate of Ithaca High School, Class of '41 and attended Syracuse University. She worked for WHCU and Mohawk Airlines in Ithaca, and was employed by The Experiment in International Living of Putney, VT as a leader of college students to foreign countries for study and home stays.
  Memorial services will be held in Forest Home Chapel on Sat. Sept. 3 at 3:00 p.m.
  She is survived by a sister Grace (Gifford) Bull of Starkville, MS and several nieces, nephews and one great-niece."
