"Mr. and Mrs. Donald H. Whitney of Bridgton and Norwalk, Conn., are announcing the engagement of Mrs. Whitney's daughter, Miss Betty Jeanne Smith, to Penfield Cowan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter G. Cowan, of Scarsdale, N. Y.
  Miss Smith was graduated from Bridgton Academy in 1943 and Colby College in 1947 where she received a BA degree with honors in English.
  Mr. Cowan was graduated from Scarsdale High School in 1943 and attended Cornell University prior to serving three years in the army. He has resumed his studies at a junior at Cornell, majoring in fine arts.
  A December wedding is planned."

"MRS. BETTY COWAN
  Services for Mrs. Betty Jeanne: Cowan, 42, of 1129 NW 83, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hahn-Cook, Street, & Draper Funeral Home with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. She died Sunday at her home following an apparent heart attack.
  Mrs. Cowan was born in McAlester and moved to Oklahoma City in 1951. She was employed as an interior decorator for about the past seven years by the J. C. Penny store at Shepherd Mall.
  Mrs. Cowan was a member of Mayflower Congregational Church.
  Survivors include two sons, Jimmy and Johnny, and a daughter, Janet, all of the home and two sisters, Mrs. Kay. Talley, and Mrs. Elaine Lott, both of California."
