"Dr. ROBERT NELSON HAMPTON (Age 91)
Passed away on July 26, 2011 in McLean, VA in the presence of his loving family. Born March 23, 1920 in Galax, VA, He served on destroyers during WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. After the war, he completed post-graduate work on the GI Bill and received his Doctorate in Marketing and Business Management from Cornell University. He worked for the Dow Chemical Company in Michigan and the International Paper Company in New York before moving to McLean in 1964 as a Vice President of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, where he received the admiration of his colleagues and professional associates while working on international trade issues.
He became a lion of the McLean Little League community, working with youngsters for 40+ years. In 1980, he was honored by having one of the Little League fields named for him, and in 2005 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Home Plate Club for his spirit and dedication to the game. As an avid lover of trees, he served on the landscaping committees of several local schools, worked with the McLean Tree Committee, and often on his own wherever he saw the need, contributing to the beautification of the area by planting countless trees and in 1987 received a Friends of Trees Award from the Fairfax County Tree Commission.
Dr. Hampton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Alice Hampton, as well as their six children, 14 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren."
