Extract from Fire Levels Apartment Building on Danby Rd [924 Danby Rd]

"Thirty persons became homeless early today as a flash fire galloped through a 120 - year - old apartment house at 924 Danby Rd., one-half mile south of the city line.
One person was injured slightly during the blaze which created a spectacular glow over South Hill. He was Ambrose (Zeke) Kouf, owner, who injured his left foot when he fell 1½ stories to the ground in the rescue of 72-year-old Fred Livingstone from his third-floor apartment.
Two dogs owned by Kouf and eight puppies and a cat which were owned by Charles Viet died in the fire. Missing is Kouf's 5-month-old beagle puppy.
Only one of the 30 residents— 17 of them were small children and teenagers-was awake when the fire broke out. He was Viet, who discovered the fire and roused the rest of the people in the eight-apartment house.

Viet said that among the possessions he lost was a new television set which was installed Monday.
Mrs. Ralph Rasch, who occupied the first-floor apartment in the west wing with her husband and three daughters, said they had planned to install a TV set today.
They managed to save a few pictures from the wall and a blanket after rousing Mrs. Rasch's brother, Harold Radcliff, in the apartment above. Radcliff occupied the apartment with his wife and three children."
