“Miss Georgia Hare, 79, longtime attorney in Groton and Tompkins County, who lived at the Syracuse Hotel, died today, Aug. 7, 1961 in the Crouse-Irving Hospital, Syracuse.
The retired attorney was the first woman lawyer to practice in Tompkins County. She received the Bachelor of Philosophy and the Bachelor of Laws degrees at Syracuse University. She practiced in Syracuse and then came to Groton in 1913 where she was a partner in a law firm with her late brother, John. She was admitted to the bar in 1910, and in 1927 to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court.
In Nov., 1960 she was cited by the Tompkins Bar Association for 50 years of public service in the courts and as an attorney. In the presentation she was described as ‘one of the most meticulous practioners.’
Miss Hare was active in politics. She ran for a seat in the Assembly and for special county judge and surrogate on the Democratic ticket.
After her retirement, Miss Hare lived in the Ithaca Hotel for several years before moving to Syracuse.
In Syracuse, she was a member of the Unitarian Church. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.”
