Obituary for Bernice B. Moore in The Ithaca Journal, Apr 15 1993
"Bernice B. Moore, 93, died at home on April 14, 1993. She was the eldest daughter of Albert and Bessie Barkee born at Lake Mills, Iowa.
While quite young, Bernice was moved with the family to Minnesota where she was raised to teenage. When the family moved to Caroline, NY, Bernice found herself ahead of the school grade at her age. She graduated from high school at age 16. She continued post graduate high school until she was of legal age to teach school children. Following the teaching experience, she completed a secretarial course and, while a private secretary, she met other persons assisting H.D. Babcock who was establishing a farm co-op. She was invited to join this group and, with Mr. Babcock's effort, the Grange League Federation was established. Bernice became secretary of the Board of GLF and assistant treasurer of GLF. She was continued in this capacity until 1932.
Following her marriage, she edited a column in the American Agriculture Magazine for some time. Also, during those years, Bernice became interested in children taken at the Preventorium who were now victims of Rheumatic Heart Disease. Formerly most all children taken in by the Preventorium had Bovine Tuberculosis of neck glands from infected milk. Following the pasteurization of milk, cases of juvenile tuberculosis became rare. Bernice organized a group of ladies who called on the family homes of Preventorium children.
