Taps have sounded for Linus S. Mackey, 93, Civil War veteran. He died this morning at his home, 511 North Plain Street.
Remarkably active for his advanced age, Mr. Mackey was widely known. Until his recent illness, he frequently visited friends about the city, preferring to walk on these calls.

He often vividly recalled those stirring days of '64 when he marched into action with Com-pany, D, 143rd Infantry. Mr. Mackey remembered in detail the many exciting experiences of his soldier life and on his 91st birthday was one of two survivors of the company in which he rose to a sergeant's grade.
Having enjoyed good health he maintained a steady interest in events of the world, local affairs and G.A.R. activities.

Mr. Mackey, who was born in the Town of Enfield, Tompkins County, was one of the pioneer painter and paperhangers in this section of the country, turning to his trade after the Civil War. Among the larger of his many contracts was the first decoration job at Cornell University in 1865 soon after he was mustered out.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 9, at his home. Interment will be at City Cemetery.
Surviving are one son, George Mackey of Owego; one daughter, Mrs. Thomas D. Smith of Rochester, three granddaughters, one grandson and one greatgrandson."
