Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet was born in Rotterdam, Holland, in 1902. He came to Ithaca in 1941 as a professor of Modern European History at Cornell, was appointed Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1945, was named Provost in 1948, and served as acting president from 1949 to 1951. In 1951, he was appointed President of the University of Rochester, NY.
