Donald Stuart Welch was born in Norway, Maine on March 12, 1894. He earned a BS from the University of Maine in 1917, an MA from Harvard in 1921, and PhD from Cornell in 1925. He was appointed assistant professor of plant pathology in 1925 and retired in 1962. When Dutch Elm Disease arrived in the U.S. in the mid-1930s, he was chosen to direct Cornell's research project on the disease. He died in Ithaca on January 27, 1972.
