Hugh Docherty Mitchell was born in 1882 in Arbroath, Scotland. According to his son, Harold Mitchell, he arrived in the United States from Arbroath about 1904, He returned to Scotland about 1906 where he met and married his wife, Alice Milne, and soon returned to America. He started employment at Cornell University ca. 1913. He died in Ithaca, NY in 1952. Ithaca City directories indicate that he was employed as a mason or foreman at Cornell from 1921 until his death.

He and his wife acquired 237 Forest Home Dr, Ithaca in 1920 and he lived there until his death. Prior to that he built and lived in the original structure of the residence now known as 131 Judd Falls Road. See https://tompkins.historyforge.net/buildings/8192

Obituary for Hugh Docherty Mitchell
The Ithaca Journal, 28 Mar 1952, P. 5, Col. 7.

"Hugh Docherty Mitchell of Forest Home, foreman of masons in the Department of Buildings and Grounds at Cornell and a university employe for 37 years, died unexpectedly at his home this morning, Friday, Mar. 28, 1952. He was 67.
  Mitchell, who came to Cornell in 1915 and was to have retired in June, worked all day Thursday.
  Born in Arbroath, Scotland, he came to this country Apr. 21, 1906 and to Forest Home in June of that year. Prominent in fraternal circles, he was past monarch of Balbec Grotto; past patron of Oriana Court 47, Order of Amaranth, and a member of Fidelity Lodge 51, F. & A. Masons; and Holv City Shrine 23, White Shrine of Jerusalem. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and past president of the Freeville Spiritualist Assembly. He belonged to Ithaca Local 17, Bricklayers, Masons and Plasterers Union.
  Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Milne Mitchell; a daughter, Mrs. Lily Ann Newbury of Ithaca; a son, Harold Stewart Mitchell of Ithaca; five grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anne Bridges of Scotland, and two brothers, William C. Mitchell of Forest Home and David W. Mitchell of Baton Rouge, La.
  Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Walter A. Dodds will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery."
