"Jean Failing, former dean of the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University, died January 30, 2008. She was 94. Jean, the daughter of Edward J. Failing and mother, Marjorie Holcomb Failing, was born in Portland, Oregon. She received B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Oregon, and the Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Ohio State University in 1940. She came to Cornell as a counselor of students in the College of Home Economics in 1939 and worked there until her retirement in 1978. During that time the name of the college was changed from Home Economics to Human Ecology. During her tenure at Cornell, Jean served as Chairman of the Counseling Service, as Coordinator of Resident Instruction, and as Dean of the College from 1974 to 1978. Jean is survived by her friend, Theresa Humphreyville, with whom she was living at the retirement community, Kendal of Ithaca."
