"Leo J. Roche, 85, whose cartoons in the Courier-Express were part of the Buffalo scene for 31 years, died Tuesday...
He was born in Ithaca where he attended high school. Between 1908 and 1916, he was a telegrapher and station agent for the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad.
He studied at the Syracuse University of Fine Arts and the Cooper Union in New York City.
Mr. Roche began his career as a cartoonist in 1916 in New York City when he went to work for Motor World. In addition to his work there between 1916 and 1926, he was a contributing cartoonist to the Saturday Evening Post and Collier's Magazines and the Encyclopedia Britannica's Book of the Year.
He worked for Universal Pictures Corp. Art Department from 1926-28 and Parents Magazine from 1928 to 1930. During that period he also did work for several newspaper syndicates.
Mr. Roche joined the Buffalo Courier-Express in 1934. Many of his editorial page cartoons over the years dealt with the issue of the right of the public and press to access to the business of governmental bodies.
In 1961, Mr. Roche compiled with a request by the Library of Congress by contributing 30 of his cartoons to its section on original political cartoons of outstanding merit....
In 1959, Mr. Roche received a George Washington Honor Plaque from the Freedom Foundation for a cartoon which depicted the voters' ultimate role in decision-making, showing one of them weighing Democrats and Republicans in each hand."
