"DURHAM - Mary Bull Shaffner, 88, of Durham, NC, Jan. 2, 2004.
Loving wife of the late Dean Shaffner. Mother of Susan Baylies of Durham, NC and Anne Shaffner of Waltham, MA. Grandmother of Peter Baylies of Durham, NC.
Memorial Service Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. at the Eno River U U Fellowship in Durham. Sister of Gifford Bull, Anne McNall, Helen Neuhaus, Christopher Bull, Alice Countryman.
Born in Ithaca, NY, Jan 1, 1916, she graduated from Cornell in 1937. She wrote poetry and was an avid jazz fan. She worked as an executive secretary in Boston and NYC before stopping to raise her children. She married Dean in 1947. They moved from Brooklyn to Glen Rock and then Ridgewood NJ, living there from 1954-1990. Dean worked at NBC Television as Director of Sales Planning. They moved to Durham, NC in 1990. Dean passed away in 1997. Mary was cheerful and sweet and amused everyone who knew her with her quick wit."
